DESCRIPTION:Jazz vocalist Liz Smith has been an active member of the Detroit music scene for many years. Classically trained but always a true jazz head\, she made her debut as a young adolescent\, and worked her way through the clubs and bars throughout the metro area\, finding her way into such venues as Baker’s Keyboard Lounge and Cliff Bell’s Jazz & Blues Club. Today she holds a regular standing with her trio every Thursday night at Goodnite Gracie Jazz & Martini Bar in Royal\, and is a regular performer at The London Chophouse and Willis Show Bar in Detroit\, Vinotecca Wine Bar in downtown Birmingham\, Lily Pearl’s Lounge in Owosso\, and many others. A 2018 Detroit Music Award nominee\, her rich vocals bring an old-world feel; her sound often compared to that of the early American jazz icons of the thirties and forties.

DESCRIPTION:Born in Pittsburgh\, keyboard/vocalist Bill Heid has performed throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, South America\, Europe\, and\nthe Far East\, including a three year stay in Japan and nearly two years in China. From 1965 through the mid-70’s\, he\nworked the Hammond B-3 organ “chitlin clubs” with his own groups and with jazz greats such as Sonny Stitt\, David\n“Fathead” Newman\, Grachan Monchur\, Mickey Roker\, Joe Dukes\, Roger Humphries\, Rodney Whitaker\, Robert Hurst\,\nGrant Green\, Jimmy Ponder\, Bruce Foreman\, and Henry Johnson\, appearing on two Johnson albums for MCA/Impulse.\nFrom 1975 to 1984\, based in Chicago\, Bill toured with blues greats Jimmy Witherspoon\, John Lee Hooker\, Son Seals\,\nand Fenton Robinson\, playing on two albums with Robinson\, two with Ko Ko Taylor\, and another with Roy Buchanan\nfor Alligator Records.\nFrom 1984 through 1999\, Heid lived and worked in Detroit\, appearing on numerous records with Detroit blues artists\nJohnnie Bassett\, Joe Weaver\, and Alberta Adams\, which included sessions for Fedora\, Cannonball\, and Black Magic\nRecords\, and two European tours. In 2000\, he relocated to Washington D.C. and in 2002\, his group toured Viet Nam\,\nIndonesia\, Sri Lanka\, and Malaysia as Jazz Ambassadors for the U.S. State Department\, returning to those countries for\nan extended tour a year later\, then backed vocalist Jay Klum on another Ambassadors tour to five African countries in\n2004.\nBetween 1996 and 2003\, Bill recorded five organ group CDs for the Savant label\, a piano trio record for Doodlin’\nRecords\, and in 2008 and 2009\, two organ group CDs for Doodlin’\, both featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein. His\nkeyboard work can also be heard on numerous European TV shows and in the U.S. on PBS documentaries and NBC’s\n“Dateline” show.

He’s performed and/or recorded with Don Was\, Roy Ayers\, Ronnie Laws\, Jim “Moose” Brown\, Sponge\, The Motor City Horns\, The Dead String Brothers\, Kenny Tudrick\, Dave McMurray\, Thornetta Davis\, Kenny G\, Bob James\, Jeff Lorber\, and countless others. When not on tour\, Chris performs on piano\, organ and keyboard throughout the Metro Detroit area\, as well as at God Land Unity Church in Detroit every Sunday morning.

A fearless improviser\, Ellie delivers songs with individuality\, passion\, and honesty. Career highlights include performing at the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival\, the Sunset Jazz Festival\, and the Michigan Jazz Festival. She was the featured vocalist with the National Arab Orchestra in San Antonio Texas\, and performed alongside jazz luminaries Geri Allen\, Terri Lynne Carrington\, Esperanza Spalding\, the New York Voices\, Jon Hendricks\, and Afro Blue. \nFrom an early age\, Ellie had a deep interest in jazz. In 2008 she completed her bachelor’s degree in voice at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she studied with Ranee Lee\, and performed at the Upstairs jazz club. In 2010\, she completed a master’s degree in vocal jazz performance at the University of Toledo. While at UT\, Ellie worked closely with the legendary lyricist\, vocalist and distinguished Professor of Jazz\, Jon Hendricks\, and wrote her master’s thesis on his early life and the formation of Lambert\, Hendricks & Ross. In addition to Hendricks\, Ellie studied with and performed regularly with legendary Detroit pianist\, Claude Black\, and bassist Clifford Murphy at Murphy’s jazz club. In 2016\, she earned her PhD in Jazz Studies from the University of Pittsburgh\, where she studied with Dr. Nathan Davis\, and Professor Geri Allen. Her dissertation how vocal group Lambert\, Hendricks & Ross mediated the vocal and instrumental roles in jazz\, while simultaneously navigating race and gender roles at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Ellie has given several national and international lectures on the vocal jazz historiography\, ranging from topics of improvisation\, intersections between voice and instrument\, vocalese\, and the formation of vocal jazz groups. Her background in Jazz Studies and performance make her a unique and distinctive educator and performer. \nEllie is currently recording her debut solo album Verdant\, a collection of original compositions that reflect on the stages of life and how we grow through mindfulness and self-acceptance. \n

DESCRIPTION:Born in Pittsburgh\, keyboard/vocalist Bill Heid has performed throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, South America\, Europe\, and\nthe Far East\, including a three year stay in Japan and nearly two years in China. From 1965 through the mid-70’s\, he\nworked the Hammond B-3 organ “chitlin clubs” with his own groups and with jazz greats such as Sonny Stitt\, David\n“Fathead” Newman\, Grachan Monchur\, Mickey Roker\, Joe Dukes\, Roger Humphries\, Rodney Whitaker\, Robert Hurst\,\nGrant Green\, Jimmy Ponder\, Bruce Foreman\, and Henry Johnson\, appearing on two Johnson albums for MCA/Impulse.\nFrom 1975 to 1984\, based in Chicago\, Bill toured with blues greats Jimmy Witherspoon\, John Lee Hooker\, Son Seals\,\nand Fenton Robinson\, playing on two albums with Robinson\, two with Ko Ko Taylor\, and another with Roy Buchanan\nfor Alligator Records.\nFrom 1984 through 1999\, Heid lived and worked in Detroit\, appearing on numerous records with Detroit blues artists\nJohnnie Bassett\, Joe Weaver\, and Alberta Adams\, which included sessions for Fedora\, Cannonball\, and Black Magic\nRecords\, and two European tours. In 2000\, he relocated to Washington D.C. and in 2002\, his group toured Viet Nam\,\nIndonesia\, Sri Lanka\, and Malaysia as Jazz Ambassadors for the U.S. State Department\, returning to those countries for\nan extended tour a year later\, then backed vocalist Jay Klum on another Ambassadors tour to five African countries in\n2004.\nBetween 1996 and 2003\, Bill recorded five organ group CDs for the Savant label\, a piano trio record for Doodlin’\nRecords\, and in 2008 and 2009\, two organ group CDs for Doodlin’\, both featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein. His\nkeyboard work can also be heard on numerous European TV shows and in the U.S. on PBS documentaries and NBC’s\n“Dateline” show.
